Seared Ahi Tuna Steak

I have never made Ahi Tuna before tonight, and holy smokes was it good.

ALL YOU NEED (for about .85 lb of ahi tuna steak, 2 servings)

  • 1 fresh sushi grade Ahi Tuna Steak (0.75-0.85 lb fish)
  • 2 tbsp + 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 c fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3/4 tsp ground ginger (or 1 tsp of fresh ginger)
  • 1 tbsp dried cilantro leaves (or 2 handfuls of fresh cilantro leaves)
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • A lot of freshly ground peppercorn
  • Dash of finely ground pepper
  • 1 avocado, freshly sliced
  • Optional: cayenne pepper to taste

SIMPLE STEPS:

  1. Whisk 3 tbsp olive oil, lime juice, soy sauce, ginger, cilantro, sugar, a dash of salt and pepper.
  2. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil on medium heat. Coat presentation-side of the ahi tuna steak with salt, fine pepper, and thick peppercorns (or thicker pepper).
  3.  Sear on first side for a minute (or 5 minutes for well-done). Coat other side of the tuna with salt, fine pepper, and thick peppercorns. Flip and sear again.
  4. While halfway done cooking, pour 1/2 sauce over tuna to cook.
  5. Serve with sauce and avocado, and enjoy!
